Presentation of Student Data on Measuring
the Human Energy Field.

Three of the students at Holos University Graduate Seminary have done their graduate doctoral dissertation work using the Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) of Dr. Konstantin Korotkov. In addition, Dr. Rizzo-Roberts also included the Meridian Stress Assessment (MSA-21) device as a comparative unit.

The purpose of Dr. Gibson's work was to explore the effects of music and focused meditation as measured by the Gas Discharge Visualization technique and Profile of Mood States (POMS). Once each week for three weeks, 45 participants had measurements done both with the GDV and the POMS before and after three different experimental conditions—music, music with focused meditation after viewing a printout of the participant's own personal energy field, and no music and no focused meditation. All subjects were over 25 years old and were defined as being healthy with no known medical diagnosis and being on no medication. Some subjects with a specific mental or physical condition were invited to participate as long as there were no alcohol or drug issues. Nineteen subjects had no diagnosis, and 30 subjects had a medical diagnosis, ranging from attention deficit disorder to Parkinsonism. The mean age was 50.47 years.

In the first session, subjects, after a review of the Informed Consent, listened to 15 minutes of music, Pachabel's "Canon in D. " In the second session, subjects viewed the GDV BEO-gram taken after the first intervention. Then they listened to the guided imagery script for focused meditation with Pachabel's "Canon in D" in the background. On the third occasion, each subject completed a Checklist of Health Issues and Illness (CHII) with no music. Dr. Korotkov hypothesizes that without a filter, the BEO-gram reflects the sympathetic nervous system; and with a filter, it reflects the parasympathetic nervous system.

The Profile of Mood States, or POMS, uses 65 adjectives to describe mood within the past week; this was used with a pre-test and "at this moment" for the post-test results. The POMS total score, as well as the individual scores for tension, depression, and distress, all showed significant improvement while listening to music and using focused meditation with music. So the psychometric test clearly showed an improvement in mood and reduction in tension and anxiety during those two conditions. The total area of the human "aura" as measured by the GDV brightness all showed significant increases after listening to music in both condition one and condition two; that is, listening to music alone or plus guided meditation. The GDV anxiety score decreased significantly with the music, but interestingly not when the subjects had seen their previously recorded GDV score. Thus, it appears that the GDV anxiety score is not necessarily a reflection of the POMS tension score. Perhaps Dr. Korotkov will have further comments on this particular aspect of Dr. Gibson's research.

acupuncture treatment

Dr. Rizzo-Roberts' research was very different. She studied both the Bio Meridian MSA-21 device, a highly advanced electrodermal monitoring system measuring the time variant potential of the skin to a constant voltage applied to acupuncture points, as well as Dr. Korotkov's GDV, the computerized modern-day version of Kirlian photography. The gas phase combination of ions generated by the discharge produces light emission that is captured by photosensors in the device. Internal computer analysis of the light emitted then provides the input for diagnosis of the energy field. In this particular study, initial recordings were made on each of 33 clinically healthy subjects, who acted as their own control. Measurements were taken prior to and and post-needling at both actual acupuncture points and non-acupuncture points. Three acupuncture points were selected: Large Intestine 4, Liver 3, and Governing Vessel 20. The acupuncture was done by C. Norman Shealy, M. D. The needles were left in place 15 minutes and then removed.

At five minutes and 30 minutes after the end of the needle removal, repeat measurements were performed, first on the MSA-21 and then with the GDV. The volunteers who received the non-acupuncture treatment the first session received acupuncture treatment in the second session and vice versa. The outcome assessed with the MSA-21 was the "maximum" value associated with each acupuncture point. For the GDV, the software package provides many means to evaluate the energy state of the individual, and the ones chosen were the S-Integer from the diagram program and a total of six variants, all from the GDV process program. Each of these variables was evaluated independently for all the measures recorded. The sham acupuncture points were within a maximum of 7 to 10 mm from the real acupuncture points, and none of the patients had any knowledge of acupuncture.

The MSA-21 results were reproducible in measurements to within significant values, variants of 0. 702, and a standard deviation of 0.838, for a total of 5,808 baseline acupuncture point measurements. The MSA was able to detect significantly, P<0.0001, a shift in energy as a result of authentic acupuncture over sham acupuncture for 84.9 percent of the subjects measured.

The GDV also demonstrated a detectable shift in energy for authentic acupuncture over that from sham acupuncture. The GDV demonstrated reproducibility with an overall variance of 0.236, and a standard deviation of 0.387, for a total of 396 measurements. The GDV's S-Integer significantly detected a shift as a result of authentic acupuncture with an accuracy of P=0.0039 for the right side at 30 minutes. Interestingly, only the right side reflected a significant difference between baseline measurements and post-measurements for authentic acupuncture. The six parameters studied from the GDV process program did not demonstrate consistent statistics with regard to one hand or the other, or one finger over another. The MSA-21 also demonstrated a greater energy change for the right side compared to the left side of the body. It is quite evident that much further work needs to be done. Again, we shall appreciate Dr. Korotkov's discussion of the fact that only authentic acupuncture on the right side of the body was detected, whereas that on the left side could not distinguish the sham and actual acupuncture.

Janet Dunlap's study is extremely different. She is evaluating the effect of intercessory prayer on DHEA and Cortisol, DHEA/cortisol ratio, the GDV, Profile of Mood States (POMS), and the Symptom Index. She chose to use only males from three urban areas, 80 males from age 35 up and in good health in general. Using systematic random sampling techniques, the subjects were assigned to either a group receiving remote intercessory prayer (40 individuals) or a Control Group (40 individuals). Participants were blind to their group assignment. At baseline and again at 12 weeks, participants were assessed on the health and well-being indicators, and for 12 weeks the investigator prayed weekly for each of the intercessory prayer group participants, using a specific prayer to request that DHEA and Cortisol levels and DHEA/cortisol ratios be adjusted to premium levels for those participants. Although the experiments have been completed, the analysis is not yet complete, but it appears that within the next two to three months we will have those results. Preliminary evaluations suggest that there will be significant differences in the two groups.
